In Iran, for long years the strata of ulema (Islamic religious scholars) have had a major impact as teachers in socializing and changing the culture of the new generations by strengthening the bonds between religion and education. In Europe, universities evolved as a result of developments in the educational centres of the Churches. In Iran, however, since ancient times, it were the Islamic ulema who ran the educational centres and in addition to religious sciences taught all branches of knowledge, including natural and physical sciences. In this way the ulema produced and groomed multisided sages. Gradually, however, instead of perfection the circle of science became limited. For example, fiqh or jurisprudence lost its original meaning of general knowledge and became the science of knowing a few limited religious issues. Likewise, Islamic knowledge, instead of its general sense was inferred in its special meaning. Later, when the intellectuals and some of the rulers realized that Iran has religious seminaries while Europeans have universities, which Iran does not have, they started establishing universities. But the methods used in universities led to the taking of certain positions in the sense that the university, instead of engaging in unprejudiced research, narrowed its stances by supporting some particular viewpoints, resulting in the widening of gap with the Islamic seminary. Unfortunately, certain Westoxicatedʹ elements, deceived by the glamour of western civilization, exploited the expansion of universities as a tool for promoting their sinister goals and those of western imperialism, by undermining religion and religious values in the society and the educational field.
