Preparation of Silicious Mesoporous Spherical and RodLike MCM-41 Using Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide as the Structure Directing Agent

MCM-41 is one of the gro ups of mesoporous materials that have wide applications as adsorbents, ion exchangers and catalyst supports. In this work spherica l and rod- like MCM-41s were synthes ized in homogeneous and heterogeneous reac tion medi a, respectively. For synthesis of these materials the ca tionic surfac tant cetyltrimethylammoni um bromide (CTMABr) was used as template and tetr aeth ylorth osilicate (TEOS) was used as the silica source . The polymerization process of the silica source was performed in basic and ac idic media using ammo nia or HCl as catalysts. BET . _ (Brunauer-Emmett-Te ller) , FTill., X-Ray diffrac tion and scanning elec tron microscopy ana lysis confirmed the struct ures of these synthesized materia ls. Finally a mechanism was proposed for the fo rmatio n of these struct ures
