گزارش وقوع پوليوآنسفالومالاسي بزغاله ها در استان خوزستان

A report of polioencephalomalacia in kids in Khouzestan province.

Polioencephalomalacia or cerebrocortical necrosis is a non-infectious neurodegenerative disease in domestic and wild ruminants. This study presents an outbreak of polioencephalomalacia in kids in Khouzestan province. Two kids with signs of central nervous system involvement including tremor, muscular spasm, opistotonus and blindness were referred to the Teaching hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz. At necropsy, the most important findings were seen in the brain which included meningeal hyperemia and edema and yellow discoloration between white matter and gray matter of the cortex of cerebrum. There were hemorrhagic foci in the paraventricular white matter and thalamus. Histopathological examination revealed meningeal hyperemia, edema, status spongiosus, laminar neuronal necrosis, basophilic and triangular ischemic neurons, liquefactive necrosis of the cerebral cortex associated with infiltration of activated microglia or gitter cells. Based on clinical signs, macroscopic and particularly histopathological findings, the disease was diagnosed as polioencephalomalacia or cerebrocortical necrosis in the affected kids.
