Piagetʹs theory has influenced developmental psychology since the 1960s. Although one of the foundations of the field, Piagetʹs conceptual framework has only recently received use in psychotherapy. His approach to cognition and his experimentation with clinical method, which aimed at an empirical epistemology within a Kantian framework, explain why his conceptualizations have had only a delayed impact on psychotherapy. Recent theoretical efforts to integrate Piagetʹs conceptualizations into a developmental psychotherapy, nevertheless, have apparent deficiencies. Critics emphasize the impossibility of adapting structural development to psychopathology and psychotherapy is due to a linear view of Piagetian development and due to his experimental approach that only defined levels of development. Developmental psychotherapy theoristsʹ approach in using Piaget concepts is limited to identifying the personʹs level of development, to adjusting the psychotherapistʹs language and method to the clientʹs level of development, and to stimulating progression and regression of clients along to the developmental stages. The and remaining conceptualizations of such an approach are nothing more than an interpretation of therapeutic processes according to Piagetʹs theory. In this article, the possibility of conceptualizing a "developmental pathology of cognition" was considered by investigating why and how cognitive distortions develop. A developmental perspective on cognitive distortions promotes a process-oriented cognitive therapy that inevitably leads to psychodynamic perspectives and to an understanding of self-knowledge processes. Evidence of the need to offer questions this kind of more advanced integration of Piagetʹs thought into the therapeutic process has appeared in such third wave cognitive-behavioral therapies as "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy."
