THE ROLE OF SOCIAL SUPPORT ON LIFE SATISFACTION, GENERAL WELL-BEING, AND SENSE OF LONELINESS AMONG THE ELDERLY

The current study investigate the role of social support on the feeling of loneliness, general health, and life satisfaction among the elderly. In accordance to related literature, social support divided into emotional and instrumental. Two hundred elderly men and women, all of them over 60 years-old, were randomly selected from all elderly citizents of Shahr-e-Kord. participants completed the General Health Questionniare (GHQ), the Life Satisfaction Scale, and the Ituarte and Rook Style for Social support. Data were analyzed using the Pearsonʹs Regression Coefficient and the Multiple Regression tests. Result indicate that social support has a meaningful effect on the sense of loneliness, general health, and life satisfaction among the elderly. With regard to the kind of social support, it was revealed that emotional support has a more important role than instrumental support, particularly on elderly women.
