Productivity growth evaluation using Malmquist index with Data Envelopment Analysis

In this paper, we will review Malmquist index as a model for evaluating the productivity growth and we will discuss its properties when Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used for evaluating the distance functions. Malmquist index allows the productivity growth to be decomposed into two components which are (i) the growth based on technological changes over time and (ii) the growth based on efficiency changes. This kind of Malmquist index leads to some capabilities and reduces some restrictions that will discuss. Finally, we will implement this method to evaluate productivity growth of 17 Asian countries over the period of 1990-1999 and then the results will be analyzed.
