A Survey of Gasoline Consumption in Iran and Reducing Measures.

At the present time, one of the most crucial problems of the societies is inner-city transportation system and gasoline consumption. It is not possible to cope with such problem otherwise fuel conservation is considered accordingly. Increasing energy consumption, especially fossil fuels, have been tackled insufficiently however if the statistics regarding allocated foreign currency to gasoline imports and domestic consumption in recent years are analyzed, fairly no economist would turn a blind eye to the issue. High global crude oil prices and oil products prices in Iranian domestic markets which are considerably lower than international levels have caused the refiners to gain lower added value- compared with similar refiners worldwide- through increasing their refining capacity. Thus, the private sector is not encouraged at all to participate in the industry. Therefore, a fundamental question arises as to whether there is a real need to create more refining capacity in Iran for coming years? The authorsʹ answer to this question is negative since they maintain that the current rate of production can meet the future demand by means of promoting efficiency of vehicles, expanding railway network and developing public transportation system.
