From ideals to reality: Critical challenges in and approaches to information organization in the present time

Information organization has always been of concern to the library and information science profession. It also has a fundamental role in the process of information management (i.e., information production, distribution and dissemination). Parallel to the growing importance of information organization, the related principles and rules have developed in order to provide a perfect framework for the organization of knowledge. Despite this important role, information organization in the electronic networked environment has faced many challenges and shortcomings. This paper attempts to identify and explore such challenges. It also aims to highlight some critical questions arisen in the new environment. Some of the challenges discussed are: information overload in different formats, deciding about the basis for bibliographic description, limitation of cataloging/organizing resource, shortcoming of name and subject of authorities at the national and international levels, contradiction between pre- coordinate and post-coordinate indexing, limitations of OPACs in search and retrieval, and indexing by Internet search engines. Provides some suggestions to overcome the present challenges.
