Antinociceptive effects of ethanolic extract of Salvia verticillata L. in adult

The aerial parts of Salvia verticillata L. (Lamiaceae) are cultivated in many European countries for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. To determine the antinociceptive effects of Salvia verticillata aerial parts, we investigated the effects of ethanolic extract of the plant in mice. Antinociceptive activity was done using by formalin and writhing tests. The ethanolic extract (10, 50 and 100 mg/kg) were injected intraperitoneally. The control groups were administered saline as vehicle of ethanolic extract. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of plant decreased second phase of pain by formalin test. The ethanolic extract exhibited antinociceptive activity against acetic acid induced writhing. The present data indicates that Salvia verticillata aerial parts have analgesic effect in mice and the plant should consider in future therapeutic studies.
