Estimation of Gene Effects and Combining Ability of Seedling Resistance to Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus in Some Wheat Genotypes through Diallel Method

In order to evaluate the genetic resistance and general, as well as specific combining abilities in Five genotypes of wheat to Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, a half diallel was made among the five genotypes. Parents and ten hybrids were planted in a randomized complete block design, while Infection type, Latent period, Area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) and the plant tissue virus (Wheat streak Mosaic) content as according to ELISA determined in greenhouse. Analysis of variance showed significant differences between genotypes, indicating the presence of additive and non-additive effects of genes for all characters. Combining ability analysis showed significant. MSgca to MSsca ratio for all characters, indicating additive variance to be more pronounced than non-addetive variance. The diallel analysis as described by Hayman and Jinks showed that additive-dominance model can most probably be appropriate. Results indicated the presence of partial dominance. Broad and narrow sense heritability estimates ranged from 26% to 71%. Genotype M73-1 was demonstrated to possess the most GCA among parents for promotion of resistance. The results further indicated dominant effects for most alleles. Significant correlations were observed among most of the traits.
