Exploitation of heterosis appears to be cheap and easy method for increasing yield in many crops and considerable success has bean achieved in this direction in crop exhibiting an appreciable degree of cross pollination. We aim to estimate of the magnitude of heterosis and inbreeding depression in chickpea. In the present study a cross was made between early maturity cultivar ICCV2 which is kabuli type, resistant to fuzarium wilt, early maturity, non pigmentation, white flower color, single pod and flower per peduncle , medium seed size, high pods per plant, low secondary branches per plant and late maturity variety JG62 which is desi type, susceptible to fuzarium wilt, pigmentation, pink flower color, double pod per peduncle, small seed size, medium pods per plant, high secondary branches per plant. The study was conducted at the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropic (ICRISAT) during Rabi (post rainy) season in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000. During vegetative and reproductive phase were recorded on number of days to flowering, number of days to podding and number of days to maturity, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, number of seeds per pod, plant width, plant height, seed size , number of primary and secondary branches per plant and grain yield. The results revealed that maximum values for heterosis over mid parent and better parent were for number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant and number of seed per plant. Minimum heterosis over mid parent observed for number of primary branches per plant. The highest positive inbreeding depression was noted for plant height. The lowest negative inbreeding depression observed for 100- seed weight. High heterosis for number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant and number of seeds per plant indicated that can be improved chickpea yield by Desi x Kabuli cross.
