Study of ratooning ability in improved varieties and promising lines of rice

One of the several ways for increasing income of rice farmers is increasing of land utility. Reharvesting or ratoon cropping is one of the most important factors for increasing rice production and income of rice farmers. Because of ratooning potential understanding in rice genotypes is the first step for research in ratoon cropping , an experiment was carried out during 2002-2003 as a completely randomized block design with four replications. At this experiment different triats was evaluated such as main and ratoon crop yield. Results showed that cultivars with shorter growth duration , lower tiller number and main crop yield have greater ratooning potential. Among genotypes, Tarom , Onda and Sahel had more ratooning rate, than other genotypes. These cultivars had 4399, 6193 and 6150 kg.ha main crop yield and 6.3 , 6 and 4 ratooning rate ( in a class according to duncan multiple range test). Therefore, according to results of this experiment, these cultivars recommended for ratoon cropping.
