Effect of flag leaf and awn removal on vegetative traits, grain yield and yield components of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum)

To asses the effect of flag leaf and awn removal on grain yield, yield component, and qualitative traits, a randomized complete block design was adopted at the Islamic Azad University College of Agriculture Research Farm in Khorasgan located at Khatoon- Abad. Significant differences existed among treatment for leaf area index, grain yield, and yield component except number of grain per spike and number of spikelet per spike 20 days post anthesis. In this study the removal of photosynthetic sources strongly affected absorbing sinks. The deletion of flag leaf by itself and absence of spike shading decreased grain yield (18%). In addition removal of all leaves in anthesis with shading on spikes caused a reduction of grain yield (77%) and decreased the1000 seed weight (60%).Remobilization of photosynthetical matter existing in shoots is important factor in filling grain post anthesis comparison to pre anthesis.
