Self- Citation and Its Application in Scientometrics

For a long tim e, citation analysis has been widely used for research performance monitoring of the sciences and social sciences. However, one of the key criticisms of citation analysis is "author self-citation" in the scholarly communication cycle. The purpose of this review is to discuss issues surroundings self-citation in the research communication and to highlight negative and positive opinions about self-citation in the scientometrics literature. Finally, the association between self-citation and research evaluation in the academic environment will be discussed.
