India was considered to be one of the biggest commercial partners of
Safavid Iran. An immense amount of local and foreign goods were
routinely exchanged between the two countries. Many merchants and
other active elements of the two countries were settled in ports and
commercial hubs of the other country, creating a huge cycle of trade and
transaction. Due to the vast inl1uence exerted by India over Iranian trade,
the analysis of this relationship seems to be of great importance.
Since commercial interactions are partly stemmed from the political
relations between countries, and since a significant aspect of commercial
growth is dependant on economic infrastructure, this paper tries to offer
an outlook of the quality of the political relations between the two
countries. It further seeks to analyze the role of the ports, roads,
transportation, and that of the tribes and classes of society involved in this
huge commercial cycle. In another segment of this paper, the kinds of
goods exchanged, the quantity of imports and exports, their values, the
monetary situation, and the trade ratio of the two countries are explained
and analyzed.
