Foreign relations, and the implementation of foreign policy, have
been of great importance to governments and dynasties ruling Iran
throughout its history. The importance of foreign relations, in the minds
of Iranian rulers, has always matched the significance of such things as
military strength, national unity, political intelligence and economic
flexibility.
The geographical and geopolitical situation of the Persian Gulf has
further instigated interest in issues of international relations lor Iranian rulers.
Nader Shah, the founder of the Afshari dynasty, who succeeded in
creating an Iranian monarchy in the 18th century, was a believer in the
eminence present in foreign policy especially in the Persian Gulf region,
and initiated many endeavors in that matter. The quality or Nader Shahʹs
foreign policy implementation with regards to companies such as the East
India Company and its French and Dutch counterparts, as well as
governments such as those of Oman and the Ottoman Empire are
discussed in this article.
