Manifestations from the reflection of "Osoule Adab" (principles of politeness) in Taarikh-e Beihaghi

Drawing on Brown and Levinsonʹs ʹpoliteness theoryʹ in discourse and some of its assumptions like ʹfaceʹ and ʹface threatening actsʹ and in terms of what has been suggested in Beeman on the language of Taʹaarof in modern Persian (,self-loweringʹ and ʹother-raisingʹ), the writer of this paper attempts to find out that to what extent politeness assumptions have been reflected in the historical and literary works of Abolfazl-e Beihaghi, the famous Iranian chronicler. One more question that the writer has been concerned with is whether there have been any striking developments in the Persian politeness system since the time Beihaghi wrote his chronicle. The study concludes by dividing instances of politeness system reflected in Beihaghiʹs chronicle into four major categories: polite forms of address, honorifics, other-raising and self-lowering
