Learning ʹ ngli "h spell ing is a om plex skill which 11a "a p itive impact on reading and
writing. But this skill can not be automatically obtain d and it should be taught through some
inductive approa hcs. Learning to spell is a developm ntal process (Ehri 1986; Gentry 1982).
This article supports the idea of a developmental pr ression from a reliance on phonological
to orthographic and morphological information an Ieaming spelling. The interaction of various
strategies and sources of information are emphasize by others (Treiman & Cassar 1997;
Rittle-Johnson & Siegler 19 ~ ) , However, what is critical is that teachers should provide
metalinguistic tasks like phonological and morph logi al I ining which can equip learners with
the skills rc uired Io m xirnal spelling performance,
