Introducing new hosts for Septaria passerinii Sacco from Iran

In a survey conducted during 2005-2006 in Khouzestan province (Dezful), symptoms of Seprorta leaf bloth were observed on some wild grasses and barley. Initial symptoms of the disease were pale brown, necrotic lesions, on leaves mostly 6 mm long. Severity of disease on the lower leaves was high. In the infected leaves, pycnidia were observed as scattered or sometimes in cluster, dark brown in color, globose with 75-170 11m diameter. Ostiole was single, approximately having 10 11m diameter. Conidia were filiform. hyaline, with 1-3-septa, 37-57 11m long and 1.5-2.0 11m wide. Corudiogenesis was holoblastic .. Based on the morphological characters, this species was identified as Septaria passerinii Sacco (Priest, 2006. Fungi of Australia, Septaria). Pathogenicity test was conducted on barley (Hordeum vulgar L.) culrivars Rehan, Makoie, Karoon Dar Kavir and Hordeum distichon L. The fungus was virulent on all of them. This is the first report of Septaria passerinii Sacco on Hordeum vulgar L. and Hordeum distichon L. from Iran.
