The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between
perfectionism and academic achievement in a sample of students.
One hundred twenty students (60 girls, 60 boys) were included in
this study. All participants were asked to complete Farsi version of
the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (FPANPS). The
mean scores of their certificate were considered as academic
achievement. Analysis of the data involved both descriptive and
inferential statistics including means, standard deviations, analysis
of variance, pearsonʹs correlation coefficient, and regression
analyses. The results revealed that positive perfectionism was
positively associated with academic achievement for both girls and
boys, but negative perfectionism was negatively associated with
sport achievement only for girls. Positive perfectionism is supposed
to influence levels of academic achievement through enhancement of self-esteem and self-confidence and characteristics such as
realistic thinking, acceptance of personal limitations, flexibility, and
satisfaction from personal performance. Conversly, negative
perfectionism is supposed to decrease levels of academic
achievement through reducing self-esteem and self-confidence, as
well as developing or intensify psychological disorders such as
depression, anxiety and negative thoughts.
