Effect of Middle Ear Infection on Gross Motor Ability in Preschool-aged Children

Introduction: Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) as discussed in this guideline is defined as the presence of fluid in the middle ear without signs or symptoms of acute ear infection. In the first year of life, more than 50% of children will experience OME, increasing to more than 60% by age of 2 years. Many episodes resolve spontaneously within 3 months, but about 30% to 40% of children have recurrent OME and 5% to 10% of episodes last for I year or longer. Materials & Methods: The goal of this research was to investigate whether Gross Motor Ability skills in preschool-aged children 20 to 60 months old with (OME) are different from those of preschool children without OME. In developing an evidence-based clinical practice guideline on managing OME, the gross motor portion of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS-GM) was used to compare 13 children with OME before and after tympanostomy tube placement to 12 children without OME. Findings: The children with OME had significantly reduced the balance in scores preoperatively compared to those without OME on the PDMS-GM. After surgery, the children with OME had higher scores than those without OME, indicating an accelerated rate of development. Conclusion: Balance in physical activity and motor development are additional factors to be considered in the medical and surgical management of the young child with chronic OME. Chronic OME may represent an additional problem for young children with existing motor deficits or other disabilities in their physical activities.
