In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in studying anger as a
major problem in human relations. Various studies demonstrated that
parents usually use anger as a way of communication with their children.
In fact anger is learned and provocation in children is related to their home environment. Uncontrolled anger in parents may lead to family conflicts;
and controlling parentsʹ anger may reduce the frequency and intensity of
anger in their children.
The present research is designed to examine the efficacy of anger
management training on interactions of mothers and their educable
mentally retarded or slow learner children. This quasi -- experimental
research was conducted on 46 mothers who were assigned equally into
experimental and control groups. Data were collected utilizing three
questionnaires: Multidimensional Anger Inventory, Anger Evaluation
Scale, and Parent-Child Relationship Inventory. The anger management
training, based on cognitive-behavioral approach, was implemented on
experimental group in seven sessions, two hours each.
The results based on the analysis of covariance revealed that anger
management training had the following effects: a) intensity and frequency
of anger in anger eliciting situations decreased, b) the use of anger control
strategies increased, and c) parent-child relationship improved. Findings
of this research confirm the effects of anger management training on
reducing anger in mothers and promoting parent-child relationship.
Finally, implications of the findings, research limitations and suggestions
for future research are presented.
