Effectiveness of Valerian As A Complementary Medicine on Bipolar Mood Disorders

The rnech an ism of va le rians effe ctive ness is the same as be nzodiaze pines affecting on GABA-A receptor. Materials & Methods : In a cl inica l trial se tt ing, a sa mp le was se lected fro m patients agi ng be tween 18 and 75 years wh o me t the di agnos tic crite ria fo r bipo lar mood di sord er accord ing to the DS MVTR and whose d iag noses were confirmed by c linical examina tion s. Eigh ty pa tie nts with a c urren t di agn osis of bipol a r di sorder pa r ticipated in a 8-w eek, paralle l-g ro up, dou bl e-blind ad dition valerian to ongo ing mood stabi lizing therapy. All the parti cipant s had a Mania Rating Scale score of 12 or higher and received co nve ntional mood stabilizers tre atmen t for a t least 3 mo nths . Eig hty particip ants we re se lected a nd upon obta ining wri tten consent were randomly di vid ed int o two equal case and control groups . Accepted : 3 Feb , 2009) Findings: Amon g the pati ents rece iving vale rian, severity and freque ncy of Man ia ra ting scale score decrea sed from 62/93(50= 15121), 67/3 at pre-trea tme nt to 41 /3 8 (50= 11/94) , 51/8 at the firs t mon th and even fur the r to 32/9(50=9/57) , 39/7 at the end of the second mo nth. In the control group, severity and freque ncy of Mania ra ting scale sco re at the e nd of the fi rs t and second months of treatme nt wer e 6 1/82(5 0 = 12/04 ),7 1122. 56/05 (50= 10/43),64/2, respectively. Us ing th e Friedma n test , we observed no significant difference in the de pression and func tio n level s before and afte r the 2-mo n ths treatmen t be tween the case and contro l gro ups .Highly sig nifica nt ben efit s of the add ition of the valerian compa red wi th the co ntro l group were fo und by 8th wee k of trea tment. Discussion & Conclusion: Co ns idering the observatio ns ac hieved from thi s study. it is concl uded tha t valeri an augments mood s tab ilize r can be used as an adj unc t treatment in bipo lar mood disorders .
