Simulation of Refinery Atmospheric Furnace For Surveying the Effects of Air Preheater

One of the methods of improving thermal efficiency of furnaces is preheating the combustion air. To install an air preheater, furnace conditions and thermal constraints should be considered; otherwise, heat imbalance in furnace would be resulted. Consequently due to decrease in heat flux in the convection section, steam superheating is not carried out completely which can be perilous to equipment utilizing this poor quality steam. Additionally, increase in heat flux in the radiation section can cause coking. This paper is an attempt to simulate a furnace by using computer programming and applying necessary consideration to avoid thermal imbalance in furnaces. The presented model shows that by applying an air preheater it is possible to increase thermal efficiency in optimized condition by 8 percent which can approximately save 40000 bbl per year of fuel oil.
