A Comparative Sstudy on the WellB eing of the Mothers of the Normal Children and Mothers of the Mentally Retarded , Blind , Deaf, and Physically Disabled Children

This research was based on a comparative study. In this study the well-being of the mothers of the normal children and mothers of the mentally retarded, blind, deaf: and physically disabled children were compared. Four hundred seventy four mothers (220 mothers with normal children, 84 mothers with mentally retarded children, 53 mothers with blind children, 89 mothers with deaf children, and 28 mothers with physically disabled children). Were selected from normal and special schools in Trenran. All subjec ts completed the short form of the General Health Questionnirae (GHQ). The total and subscores of the GHQ showed non-significant differences between the mothers of the normal children and the rest of the mothers. However, on the total score of the GHQ, there was a significant di fference between the mothers of the blind children and the rest of the mothers. These mothers had higher scores on the Anxiety and Sleeping problem subscales as well. Interpertation of results focouses on the observability of the disability in blinduess, social isolation and gender or the blind children.
