Investigating the Deteriorating Effects of Magnesium Sulfate Attack on Portland Cement Blended with RFCC Spent Catalyst

Used catalyst from Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) unit of petroleum refining processes is an industrial waste material polluted with heavy metals that exhibits significant pozzolanic properties. This material affects the properties and mechanical strength of Portland cement considerably when utilized as an additive. Experimental results confirm that Consumed RFCC catalyst strongly reduces the chemical resistance of Portalnd Cement in spite of its positive effects on strength behavior (due to pozzolanic reaction). Such a different effect in comparison to pozzolanic materials is due to role of this material in increasing the permeability of hardened Portland cement paste.
