Investigating the Iranian Origins of Kelilah and Demnah

Abd-allah Tbn Moghaffa, is an architect of Arabic language and literature and also one of the few guardians of Iranian culture. Through the translation of Kelilah and Demanah, he developed a new style for the Arabic prose, and also introduced Iranian ancient literature and culture to the Arab world in an appropriate form for its time. The present article aims at investigating 29 wise statements from Kelilah and Demanah that often appear without any change in valid Arabic sources. In addition, we will work to substantiate the hypothesis that, although traces of Indian culture cannot be denied, the book, apparently, consisting of Iianian thought and wisdom, is of Iranian origin. Ibn Moghaffa, as an expert both in Arabic and Persian literature, knew well how to compose the piece. As all acknowledge the great impact of this book on Arabic literature, proving the hypothesis might open up new outlets in Iranological researches and in studying the influence of Iranian culture on Arabic literature.
