Seismic Quick Loss Estimation Methods

The management of information regarding seismic hazard, vulnerability of structures and lifel ine systems and also those related to emergency response activities has crucial importance in planning and allocating resources to cope with disastrous events such as earthquakes. The delay in accessing such information has adverse effects on the search/rescue activities and the planning dedicated for disaster management. The traditional methods in gathering such information to estimate the earthquake losses usually require extensive work and are time consuming. These facts are problematic in the emergency response phase. Different advanced technologies such as remote sensing and dedicated systems for city monitoring based on data streams from the networks of seismographs and lifelines systems have been employed for the purpose of rapid loss estimation in many earthquake prone countries. In this paper, some of the current seismic quick loss estimation methods are explored and explained.
