Development and Evolution of General Historiography in Iran during Safavid Period, with Special Reference to Khold-e Barin (1628-1722 AD

The establishment of Safavid dynasty and its subsequent cultural and political changes had a significant effect on all aspects of life in the then Iran. Historiography, as one of the major branches of intellectual, cultural and political activities of this era, was also influenced by these changes. In Safavid period all branches of historiography developed and advanced, and under the influence of religious and political measures of the Safavids, and particularly the Shiʹite thoughts, became to some extent distinct from the patterns and views of the pre- Safavid period. From among the differing branches of Iranian historiography, writing of general histories was the outcome of the especial features and thoughts. This branch of historiography, under the influence of the said changes, took on novel qualities and developed. Though the establishment of the Safavid dynasty and its rule over Iran has been explored by numerous researchers and various aspects of life in Iranian society in this period have been studied, the historiography of this period still requires substantial research on all dimensions The present paper draws an image ol the general historiography in the period between the death of Shah Abbas I and the fall of Safavids (1628-1735 AD) and tries to assess the models of general historiography as well as the methods and the viewpoints of the historians who wrote general histories.
