Energy Management In Iranian Industries: The Case Study of the Relationship Between Electricity Consumption and Value Added in Small Scale Industries (with 10-49 workers)

Iran is a country with rich energy resources. These resources can be a main factor in production and economic development if used efficiently and effectively. Small Scale enterprises account for a significant portion of energy used in Iran. In recent decades, due to the development of production technology and efficiency of energy consumption, high quality energies like electricity have superseded low quality energies such as coal and wood. The changes in the structure of energy use in industry underscores the need for a review of the relationship between energy use and increase in value added. In this paper we attempt to study the relationship between electricity consumption and the value added of small scale industries (SSI) based on panel data over the period of 1994 to 2006. The study has an empirical orientation and follows an evidence based analytical approach. The result of this study indicates that there is a positive, two way relationship between electricity consumption and value added in small scale industries (with 10-49 workers). This relationship indicates that an increase in electricity consumption can encourage economic activities and as an input alongside other factors of production, it can be lead to an increase in value added of industrial activities
