The Shiʹi Clergy and Their Functions in Imam Khomeiniʹs View

The applied findings show that the main obstacles for the colonialistsʹ interests in Islamic communities are Islam, peopleʹs religious beliefs and the true clergy. Therefore,the colonialists followed up invading Islam and the clergy with two goals: firstly they aimed at scorning, mocking, and reducing the clergyʹs status and dignity in peopleʹs minds so that they would be deprived of all popular support. Secondly they aimed at making the clergy believe that religion is separated from politics and social affairs so that they would be deprived of the motivation for any movement and reforming social affairs. This goal was pursued by diffusing the idea of separation of religion and politics (secularism). Although enemies propagate the idea that religion is separated from politics and administration of social affairs, the clergy and religious scholars have always played an important and influential role in all periods. In this research, we have tried to show whether the clergy are expected to intervene in politics and social affairs, or they should deal with individual affairs and relations between human and the Creator. Imam Khomeini believed in a deep bond between politics and piety and would severely oppose the idea of a separation between politics and religion. This has been studied by using his thoughts and ideas.
