A survey of hysterectomy indicatons in Jahrom Iran, 2003.

Introduction: Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in gynecology. With appropriate indications, it can lead to uterine disorders although it may result in seveer complications The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiology and indications of hysterectomy and its pathological findings among patients who underwent the procedure. Material and Methods: Recording files of all of the patients (170 patients) who underwent hysterectomy during 2002-2003 in Jahrom were studied. Pathological results were also obtained from laboratory recording files. Results: Among these patients, 56.5 percent underwent abdominal procedures and 43.5 percent underwent vaginal procedure. The most prevalent indications for hysterectomy were uterine prolapse, and abnormal uterine bleeding respectively. The most frequent pathological findings in the studied patients were adenomyosis and leiomyomas. Conclusion: A revision in hysterectomy indications and preserving the procedure for reasonable causes seems to be necessary.
