The main purpose of this research is to compare the performance of popular search engines in retrieval of the copyright information. To achieve this purpose, the entries of copyright and intellectual property as well as all their broader, narrower and related terms were searched in the five thesauri of ERIC, UNESCO, PROQUEST. ASFA, and NAMA. The resulting keywords, the sum of which cover the whole area of copyright.
were searched in the form of 18 questions in the six search engines of Alta Vista, excite, fast search (Alltheweb), Google, Hotbot, and Yahoo. The first ten results of each search were scrutinized using the criteria of relevance, validity, currency and the number of inactive links (errors).
The results indicated that the two search engines of Google and Alta Vista were among the top three popular search engines considering all the measured criteria. Concerning the criteria of retrieval of related results, Google had the best performance, while Alta Vista and Alltheweb stood in second and third places respectively. Also the best search engine in the retrieval of valid results was Alltheweb. while Alta Vista and Google rated as second and third search engines. As for the currencyof retrieved web pages, Hotbot was the best among all the studied search engines. Google and Alta Vista stood in second and third places. Moreover concerning the amount of observed errors (inactive links), the four search engines of Google, Excite, Hotbot Alta Vista (jointly) were rated as the four top search engines respectively.
