3. Impediments to the Development of the Supplementary Group Health Insurance in Iran: Insurance Experts Perspective

Illness is one of the major risks confronting human beings. Sickness not only imposes heavy costs on patients, but also reduces work ability and income of patients. Therefore, it reduces production. Even though, we have been able to reduce the damages from catastrophic risks like flood and earthquake to minimums, but have not been able to overcome the disaster consequences of all diseases. Thus, the need for insurance coverage of medical expenses is urgent. In this research article, we have tried to identify factors which have been influencing the lack of the development of the supplementary group health insurance in Iran. The statistical group consists of field experts from Iran, Dana, Asia insurance companies offering supplementary group health insurance. The five factors identified are: marketing, supply of primary group health insurance by government organizations, regulatory environment, human resources of insurance companies, and financial situation the insured. At the end, some suggestions are provided for the development of the supplementary group health insurance in Iran.
