Concept of Defeat in Jalal Al-e-Ahmadʹs Stories

Al-e-Ahmad is a committed writer of Iran who belongs to an era when writers and intellectuals were disappointed by 28th Mordad coup dʹetat and overwhelmed by feeling of defeat and frustration. What makes Al-e-Ahmadʹs stories significance is his efforts to over come such an atmosphere. This article considers some of his stories including Track, Grimace, The Robbed Person, Insurance Book, Tuberculous, Minarets and Bastinado and attempts to show that the narrator; usually a solitary figure, makes effort to over come the dominant atmosphere of frustration and despair. Al-e-Ahmad through creating ironic and symbolic space for his characters on the one hand, and by means of providing a childlike atmosphere in some of his stories; for example Minarets and Bastinado, on the other hand he suggests that one resolution for the problems and frustration dominating his era is to take refuge in the peaceful world of childhood.
