The Impact of Cardiac Rehabilitation Program on Physical Symptoms in Patients Referred to Cardiac Rehabilitation Center

Background &Objectives: The prevalence of heart disease is increasing worldwide as well as in our country; nowadays the percentage of mortality caused by it is about 46%. The aim of community health nurses (the third level of prevention) is to limit disability and complications and provide rehabilitation for individuals with impaired function. Cardiac rehabilitation is an interdisciplinary activity aiming at a higher level of facilitating and improving the physical, psychological and emotional state as well as empowering patients to attain higher levels of health, through exercise, relaxation and health education in hospital and community. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cardiac rehabilitation program on physical symptoms in patients referred to Shahid Madani Rehabilitation Center of Tabriz. Materials & Methods: This study was a pretest- post-test controlled trial which was conducted on 80 included patients referred to Shahid Madani Rehabilitation Center. The data was collected by Goldberg General Health Questionnaire and analyzed by using SPSS/15. Results: This study shows that 60 people of participants (75 percent) were male and 20 patients of them (25 percent) were female. The age range of patients was 57 /41 ± 1/01 (Mean± SE). Even t-test showed significant statistical difference in physical symptoms before and after the study period. (P=0.001). Conclusion: The study results show significant improvement in physical symptoms after conducting cardiac rehabilitation interventions. So it is urgent that patients with heart diseases should be referred to these kinds of centers for restoring ability for an independent life. Community health nurse will have a significant role as a major team member in educating patients and their families in all stages of rehabilitation (hospital, outpatient and home).
