Nursesʹ Viewpoints of Ranking of Caring Behaviors in Patients with Cancer

Background & Objectives: Nowadays cancer is one of the most pressing health problems all over the world. In this respect, there are many opportunities for nurses to help patients in improving the experience of cancer, and to deliver important caring behaviors which make nurses to be able to provide necessary care and support at every stage of the cancer trajectory. So with a complete perception of the importance of care behaviors, nurses will cause an effective interaction between nurse-patient which will be lead to a better nursing care as well as increasing the rate of patientʹs satisfaction from nursing services. Nevertheless, few studies have been done on perception of oncology nurses in ranking of caring behaviors. Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive study conducted among all of the nurses (N=40) working in cancer wards of Shahid Ghazi-Tabatabaee hospital of Tabriz( 2009). We collected information by using Caring Assessment Questionnaire, developed by Larson ordered in 6 subscales: "monitoring and follow up", "explains", "comforts", "having trusting relationship"anticipates", "being accessible",. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics using SPSS /14.0. Results: Nurses evaluated the importance of caring behaviors at moderate to high. Also they evaluated the "monitoring and follow up " and "being accessible" as high ranking and the "anticipates", "explains", "Comforts" and "trusting relationships" as low ranking dimensions. Conclusion: On comparison to other studies the different ranking of care by nurses of our study can be relevant to cultural context which is effective viewpoints on care. With regard of high ranking of "monitoring and follow up" and "being accessible" as important care behaviors, itʹs recommend that nursing managers would enhance the preconditions of these two aspects of care.
