Descriptive Evaluation of Clinical Characteristics, Readmission and Risk Factors during a Three-Year Period in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure in Tabriz Shahid Madani Hospital

Background & Objectives: Congestive heart failure is a chronic and disabling condition with growing prevalence. In spite of the fact that the mortality rates of coronary artery disease is descending, the incidence and complications of CHF is raising. This study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics, readmission and risk factors in patients with CHF in Shahid Madani hospital of Tabriz 2006 to2008. Materials & Methods: A total of 623 patients with CHF that were admitted in Tabriz Shahid Madani hospital during 2006-2008, were participated in this retrospective descriptive study. Demographic characteristics, disease outcomes, admission times and CHF risk factors of them were evaluated. Results: From the total number of participants 56.7% were male and 43.3% were female. The mean age of participants was 67.59±13.96. 17.8% of participants were died in the hospital and 82.2% were discharged with primary healing of the disease. 40% of them had been readmitted; the mean admission rate was 1.83 ± 1.39. The most common risk factor was hypertension (65/2%). Conclusion: These results and the high prevalence of mortality and readmission rate indicate that the health and economic load of CHF on health system is significantly high. Thus there is an urgent need for educating people about risk factors and, subsequently decreasing the costs passed on to the health care system.
