Iraniansʹ National Unity and Solidarity: Foundations and Roots

The creation of national unity and solidarity is one of the important problems facing the societies characterized by cultural diversity. Iran is amomg those countries which face such a problem. The characteristics of the new world including globalization, transnational sovereignty, extraterritorial movements and many other factors have compromised national unity and solidarity. Addressing the challenges and pathologies of national unity and solidarity seems necessary. Essentially, the interference of foreigners and decisions taken by the political system are the most important factors influencing unity and solidarity. The policies adopted by the governments could involve a continuum from coexistence to disparity. The author believes that willingness of different ethnic and cultural groups to separate from the central government is induced by decisions, resource and value distribution and classifications made by the political system. These actions intensify the feeling of injustice, inequality and discrimination among minorities and encourage them to vindicate their rights. Therefore, sound decision - making and management in planning and formulating strategies can prevent the emergence of such feelings which might bring about unfavorable consequences for the political system. Despite many fluctuations in policies adopted by different governments in Iran, we still witness a kind of general unity and solidarity in this country. This is the topic discussed by the present article.
