Evaluation Of Residual Stresses in Brake Disk Rotors

Gray cast Iron Brake rotors are common to many caliper disc braking systems . their attractive characteristics for this application include low cost, ease of manufacturing good machinability, and good thermal conductivity .Production of disk brake rotors provides several opportunities for the development of residual stresses .These stresses have the potential to offect the performance of the rotor in service in particular .The driving force for this study was the phenomenon of " brake judder " , a simple excitation of the vehicles suspension system .It is known that relief of residual stresses in service could be responsible for dimensional changes (wraping or twisting ) in the rotor,which could in turn contribute to the judder phenomenon experienced by many drivers. The presence of residual stresses in gray cast iron rotors have been Investigated in this research and the effects of shot blasting , temperature of castings during casting removal from the mold , heat treatment ,duration time ,and machining operation have been invastigated.
