Classification of Iranian rice genotypes based on Fischer linear discrimination functions under different levels of osmotic potential caused by Sorbitol

An experiment was conducted to classify Iranian rice genotype under osmotic stress based on Fischer linear discriminate function. A factorial arrangement including 27 cultivars and five electrical conductivity levels (normal, 2, 4, 6 and 8 dS.m"1) on a randomized block design were done in Rice Research Institute of Iran in 2006. Significant differences were detected between cultivars and electrical conductivity levels for traits and germination indices. Hashemi had the highest mesocotyl, radical and coleoptile but had the lowest germination percent. Cluster analysis based on germination traits and germination indices assigned genotypes in four groups at normal condition and three (tolerant, intermediate and sensitive) and four (tolerant, semi tolerant, semi sensitive and sensitive) groups at 6 and 8 dsm-1, respectively. All of the cases, discrimination analysis confirmed clustering genotypes. According to these results, clustering analysis can be used for providing breeding population. Also, linear discrimination function at stress condition can be used for determination of improved seed reaction to osmotic stress.
