Melon is an agriculturally and economically important crop. Iran is regarded as a prominent center of diversity for melons. Six Iranian melon Iandraces along with one exotic cultivar were selected to be used in a complete diallel analysis for estimation of gene action, number of effective factors, heritability as well as other genetic parameters. Seven parents, 21 F1 and 21 reciprocal F1 were grown in a lattice design of 4 replications during 2006 crop season in two conditions of pruning and non-pruning. Characteristics of number of fruits per plant, weight (kg) per fruit, length and width (cm) per fruit, flesh thickness (cm) of the fruit as well as total yield per plant were assessed. Mean squares among genotypes were significant at 1% level for all traits in either one of the conditions. Diallel analysis by Haymanʹs method indicated that the length, width, weight and number of fruits and flesh thickness were controlled by partial dominance in both conditions. There was overdominance gene effect observed in the pruning condition, this effect not being observed in the non-pruning condition. Mirpanji was the best combiner for yield and weight while Abasali had the highest potential for producing fruits. High broad and narrow sense heritabilities for number of fruits, weight, length, width, and flesh thickness indicate the low effect of environment and high effect of additive gene action in control of these traits.
