The Effect of Corruption on the External Image of Organization

Corruption in all organizations is a serious, important problem, which has many types and can, on the basis of how it occurs, take such many forms as bribery, embezzlement, swindling, extortion, and granting concessions. It can also be divided into three types, namely, black, white, and gray based on cultural and ethical values of society and the difference in viewpoints of people and the political elite. In addition to the destructive intra-organizational effects, organizational corruption goes beyond borders as well, thereby damaging the external image of organization. The external image of organization comprises cognitive, affective, and emotional information. The external image of organization shapes through the information people perceive from the organization, playing a significant role in the organizationʹs success and attracting rare environmental resources, ample social capital, and public trust. This article deals with societyʹs perception of corruption in the organization as one of the factors which can affect the organizational image. Destroying the organizational image can contribute to the loss of key organizational resources especially institutional support. Corruption can damage the organizational reputation in such a way that organizationʹs notoriety, ill-reputation and, probably, fall can increase and accelerate in the long run.
