Efficacy of teaching innovative patenting strategies

Parenting style has an important role in childrenʹs development and their personality. In our country, in spite of the importance of the role of family in child rearing, well researched parent education programs are not presented to families. The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the efficacy of parenting workshops. In these workshops, parents become familiar with problem solving approach, and they apply these skills in real life. Children are also active along with their parents during the training process. Following every session of these workshops, children work on assignments to practice problem solving beside their parents and they are persuaded to think; consequently increasing their self confidence and independence. Each session of these workshops include lesson plans that present difficult situations to parents requiring them to solve various problems. In this research, 45 parents (33 mothers & 12 fathers) participated in the workshops. Each workshop consisted of 10 sessions, one hour and fifty minutes each. Experienced instructors taught parents based on lesson plans designed by the researchers. The present study utilized a quasi- experimental research method with pre & post tests without control group. The researchers developed a questionnaire on children behavioral problems and used it along with Robinson Parenting Questionnaire (PRQ) for evaluating the effectiveness of these workshops. Analysis of data indicates that these workshops had positive effects on parenting styles, and decreased children behavior problem. Finally, implications of the findings, research limitations, and suggestions for future research are presented.
