The Safavid age was the starting point of Iranʹs development of expansive political relations with European countries, especially with Poland. The Ottoman threat, and commercial business were the two driving forces behind the expansion of relations between Iran and Poland during the seventeenth century. At the advent of the century, the Ottoman threat to its neighbors, especially Iran and Poland, was growing in Shah urgency. This provided for a common ground on which Iran -under Abbas I- and Poland attempted to form a military-political alliance against the Ottomans.
With the signing of the peace treaty between Poland and the Ottoman Empire, and between Iran and the Ottoman Empire, the relations between Iran and Poland decelerated. With Suleimanʹs rise to power, there came an increase in the offensive Ottoman incursions into Poland. As a result, Poland once again sent more than ten diplomatic delegations to Iran, looking to sign military and political agreements.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relations between Iran and Poland during the seventeenth century. These relations declined at the end of the century, for reasons that include the lack of symbiosis regarding each countryʹs corresponding periods of war and peace with the Ottoman Empire, and the signing of the peace agreement between Iran and the Ottomans.
