The two Muslim and neighboring nations of Iran and Ottoman Turkey have had generally good relations throughout their history. Even though at times political and military tensions seemed to rise, these tensions were not serious or deep enough to dissolve the friendship between these two nations. No doubt that the ancient religious, political, scientific, cultural and mystical connections between the two nations have had an immense role in the endurance of this friendship. The constant transportation of commercial and pilgrim caravans throughout the Ottoman realm - which held within it all the major pilgrimage sites of Shiite Muslims- and the mutual immigration of citizens from one country to the other resulted in even further strengthened relations.
Sometimes, of course, these relations seemed to cool, especially due to Ottoman actions. Despite all the respect that Iranians held for the Ottomans, the Ottoman leaders often disrespected and mistreated Iranian merchants or pilgrims. Iranian monarchs often emphasized the route security and the safety of Iranian merchants and pilgrims in treaties and agreements signed with the Ottomans, but most of these efforts proved fruitless.
