Aims. This clinical trial study was to compare postoparative surgical site infections in interrupted versus continuous subcuticular skin closure in clean/contaminated wounds. Materials & Methods. This is a randomized clinical trial study performed during 2007 to 2008 on 200 patients referred to one of Tehran hospitals (100 patients in each group). Surgical sitesʹ infections (SSIs) evaluated following two periods; first week and first month. Quantitative and qualitative variables analyzed by t-test and chi square, respectively. Data analyzed used SPSS 11.5 software. Results. The average age of the paitents were 36.4±17.7 years (minimum of 18 and maximum of 64). 73 patients were females and 127 patients were males. Eight patients with SSIs found among all (4%). The rate of SSIs were 3 cases in continuous subcuticular group and 5 cases in interrupted group in clean/contaminated wound. No significant difference between 2 groups found (p=0.4). Conclusion. The method of continuous subcuticular suture does not increase the risk of SSIs. Considering cosmetic effects and less post operative pain, decrease of duration of surgery and less hospital cost, the continuous subcuticular suture is recommended in clean/contaminated wounds.
