British Foreign Policy during the Reign of Mohammad Shah (Qajar)

The Qajar era is an era marked by imperialist exploitation of Iran. The separation of parts of Iran through either military intervention or with the help of separatist movements was on the agenda of governments like those of Russia and Britain. Since the late 1820s, the creation of a security buffer zone in the eastern borders of Iran became necessary to the British rulers of India. Therefore they tried to instigate divides between the central Iranian government and the eastern Iranian citizens. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the uneven relations between Iran and Britain during the reign of the third Qajar king. A time period marked mainly by the Herat problem, yet interesting in its case of political instability and chaos.
