In this review the general approach for modeling of the particle size distribution (PSD) in emulsion polymerization is presented using the population balance equation (PBE). After the explanation of concepts and development of PBE in general form, the models for physical phenomena (particularly nucleation and coagulation) and the polymerization kinetics in dynamic modeling of PSD have been reviewed. Recent developments have also been classified and compared, showing the current interests in this field. This study reveals various aspects of PSD modeling in emulsion polymerization from population balance point of view, and indicates that in spite of several papers recently published in this area, there are some problems that should still be clarified for more understanding of physical models. This includes study on the effect of mixed emulsifier systems on PSD as well as coagulation phenomena in emulsion polymerization.
