Sulfur Extended Asphalt: A Laboratory Research and Field Trial

Huge amounts of sulfur produced as a by-product in oil and gas industries and its low consumption in Iran have caused several problems.In this article, the use of sulfur as an extender for asphalt has been investigated. Different research phases including laboratory and field investigations and environmental aspects of sulfur extended asphalt (SEA) have been considered. Through laboratory investigations, the appropriate asphalt mix design and other required parameters have been obtained, and then SEA concrete produced and has been tested for performance evaluation in field scale. This article also presents obtained results including the effect of sulfur substitution on the properties of bituminous paving mixtures and represents the optimized conditions.
